Meta Muse AI agent gains Shopify checkout while Amazon blocks it

On September 21 and 22, 2026, Meta announced a partnership with Shopify to embed Shop Pay checkout directly into Muse, its AI shopping agent, giving Muse the ability to complete purchases across all Shopify stores without the user leaving the agent. Shopify shares rose between 7 and 8 percent on the news, while Meta shares eased. During the same weekend, Amazon declined to participate, blocking Muse from its platform entirely. Separately, The Verge reported that Meta had patched a security exploit in Muse that had allowed outside attackers to take control of the agent, with the fix rolling out alongside the Shopify deal.

The split between Shopify and Amazon effectively divides a large portion of e-commerce into two camps at the moment agentic purchasing is moving from concept to live product. The security patch arriving at the same time as the commercial rollout adds weight to internal concerns already circulating at Meta. Carl Quintanilla cited a Reuters report quoting an internal employee post warning that the company was "one bug away from unnecessary information being leaked to human callers," a concern that points to a separate disclosure issue: 404 Media reported that some Muse tasks are routed to human contractors at call centers, with Meta telling employees those workers had undergone "a lot of training" as reassurance.

Pro-AI voices treat the Shopify deal as confirmation that AI is moving from answering questions to taking action, a direction they welcome. Mack Butterfield framed it as the natural trajectory of the technology, while Code and Clarity argued that Meta's social media scale gives it a structural advantage in the AI competition. On Amazon's refusal, lxgr said the company blocking a competitor it cannot fully control is, if anything, a good outcome for the market. Critics push back hard on the security and transparency picture. Hellishchildren and 404 Media both highlighted the human contractor layer that users may not know exists, and NaNay Pudding captured a simpler objection: outright disinterest in the product. The argument will sharpen as regulators and merchants examine how user data moves between Muse, Shopify's payment infrastructure, and any human contractors in the loop. Amazon's next move, whether it builds a competing agent or continues to block external ones, will also determine how much of the e-commerce landscape Muse can realistically reach.
