Meta launches Muse AI agent with Shopify and Instacart deals

On September 22, 2026, Meta launched Muse, an AI agent designed to complete purchases on behalf of users, and announced two commerce partnerships to back it. The first links Muse to Shopify's Shop Pay checkout system, giving the agent the ability to transact across Shopify's merchant network without the user leaving the interface. The second extends Muse into grocery delivery through a deal with Instacart. Markets responded sharply: Shopify shares climbed between 7 and 8 percent on the day of the announcement, and Meta shares also rose. The Verge described Muse as effective at initiating purchases on behalf of users and framed its spending capabilities as a central feature rather than a secondary one.

The launch matters because it positions Meta to collect a share of retail transactions, not just advertising revenue, which would represent a meaningful structural shift in how the company makes money. The Shopify integration in particular gives Muse instant access to a vast merchant base without Meta having to build that supply side itself. At the same time, an agent that holds payment credentials and acts autonomously on a user's behalf raises questions about control, data custody, and what happens when something goes wrong. Amazon is notably absent from any partnership, and observers have flagged that its refusal to participate complicates Muse's path to becoming a universal shopping layer.

The pro-AI camp is treating Muse as a growth inflection point. The middle ground sees genuine capability but genuine risk.
