Meta expands Muse AI agent to Instagram creators and small businesses

Meta launched Muse, an AI agent for Instagram, making it available to creators around September 27 and 28, 2026, for account management tasks. By September 29, Meta extended Muse to small businesses, adding new skills and app connectors, including a direct integration with Shopify. The two-phase rollout positions Muse as something broader than a creator utility, pointing toward a general-purpose business management tool built into Instagram's infrastructure.

The Shopify integration is the detail that changes the stakes. Connecting an AI agent to a commerce platform means Muse can, in principle, act on transactions and customer data, not just schedule posts or draft captions. That shift raises questions about accountability and data handling that a creator-focused tool would not, and it arrives while critics are already disputing whether the underlying system is safe for public deployment at all.

The anti-AI camp is the most vocal here, with specific and serious concerns on the record. David Gerard claimed that Muse uploads past and present Apple Messages to Meta's cloud even when users have instructed it not to, a data-handling allegation that cuts directly at trust. Andrew Couts pointed to an investigation into Muse's alleged ability to surface personal information about people in at-risk communities, describing it as a doxxing risk. The account astray.cc called the release "perhaps the most irresponsible AI release so far," while Hypervisible noted that documented unreadiness has not slowed business adoption. Aaron Ross Powell and val, who described themselves as "AI-forward," both said they would not use Meta products, with val specifically citing Muse. The pro-AI camp has posted no reactions to this story yet; typically that camp would argue that agent-driven tools expand access to professional-grade marketing for small operators who cannot afford dedicated staff. The middle ground, represented by Meng Li, raises a structural question rather than a values one: when an AI agent controls consumer intent inside a transaction, who holds accountability if something goes wrong.

The data-handling claims are the clearest thing to watch. If the alleged Messages upload behavior or the doxxing findings are confirmed through formal investigation or regulatory inquiry, that would define how seriously Meta's privacy commitments need to be revisited. The Shopify integration's scope, specifically what data it can access and how agent actions on transactions are logged or reversed, is the other open question that the current rollout has not publicly answered.
