Google tests Flipkart purchases inside Gemini and AI Mode in India

On September 27, 2026, TechCrunch reported that Google has begun a limited test allowing users in India to purchase products from Flipkart, the Walmart-owned e-commerce platform, directly inside the Gemini assistant and AI Mode interfaces. The pilot covers only select products and users, with a wider rollout expected later in October. The timing is deliberate: India's festive shopping season, one of the country's highest-volume retail periods, begins in early October. Separately, Flipkart listed the Google Fitbit Air at Rs 13,999 ahead of an October 2 India launch, though that listing is a distinct event from the Gemini checkout integration.

The move represents one of the clearest attempts yet to turn a conversational AI interface into a direct commerce layer, bypassing the traditional step of sending users to a browser or separate app. Because Flipkart is Walmart-owned, the partnership also connects two of the world's largest retail ecosystems to Google's AI stack. What is genuinely in dispute is whether embedding checkout inside an AI assistant is a natural evolution of search-to-purchase behavior, or an aggressive consolidation of user behavior inside a single corporate interface. A related question is whether users are meaningfully consenting to these commerce features appearing in tools they use for general queries.

The Pro-AI camp frames the integration as a straightforward convenience improvement. The account KIBOTI described the experience in German, noting that checkout starts directly in the chat, Flipkart-branded, with no need to leave the AI interface, treating frictionless purchase flow as the core value. The Anti-AI camp is more hostile, and its objections go beyond this specific feature. Dominar Abner called Gemini objectively worse than Google's previous smart assistant, while accounts including sango, Lake, and Gayve described Gemini as pushy and unwanted, with one account noting users can revert to the older assistant. PPC Land added a structural concern, stating that Google switched on AI Mode checkout for Shopify stores without asking users, framing consent as the underlying issue. The Middle Ground position, represented by Rowan Johnson, argues that Gemini is behind competitors on capabilities like MCP support and agents, raising the question of whether the product is mature enough to anchor a commerce experience at scale.

The late-October broader rollout will be the first real test of whether users in India engage with in-chat checkout or route around it. How Google handles opt-in mechanics, and whether similar integrations appear in other markets or with other retailers, would clarify whether this is a regional experiment or the start of a wider commerce strategy built into its AI products.
